Have you been thinking about saying, “I quit” lately? If so, you’re not alone. The number of people quitting their jobs has skyrocketed to 4 million each month. It may seem like something new since they’re calling it the “Great Resignation”, but we found that quit rates have increased over the past five years.
Several very good causes are spurring this departure. Here in Houston, TX, we keep seeing these 5.
1. Bad bosses.
Employees are sick and tired of seeing people getting promoted because of who they know, upper management incompetence, or other agendas. When people who don’t know how to be good leaders get put into places of power, everyone suffers. If you’re stuck between this rock and a hard place, you only enable your bad boss to stay in power.
It’s time to say, “I quit”.
2. Toxic co-workers.
Do you find yourself taking the worries of co-workers home with you? Chances are you have a toxic work environment. Unhealthy work environments are mentally and physically draining. It triples rates of depression and notably lowers your productivity. In a nutshell, spending time around toxic people keeps you from being who you’re meant to be.
3. Feeling undervalued? You probably are.
Few people working for someone else get the opportunity to reach their full potential. More often than not, companies want to put people in boxes. They can then define when you advance and how much of the money your productivity makes goes into your pockets. If that’s a fair cut, then maybe you should stay if you like your job, but if not, it’s time to move on.
4. You need flexibility.
We all face times when maintaining a schedule set by someone else doesn’t work. You may have small children, an aging parent, or a health condition. You can still get a lot done, but at odd hours or from home. Yet, most workplaces continue to lack flexibility. If you were your own boss, you could build your schedule around your availability, not store hours.
5. You could do it better as a free agent.
There we said it. The truth is you have skills and could probably do a better job if you were running the show. You’d get paid what your labor is actually worth and could control the direction your company goes. As a result, you’d have the ability to maximize your earnings.
